We just got our young superstar and future captain locked up for 5+ years to a cap hit that works. Anyone bitching about this is just a sandy vag. Expect him to be named captain in the summer.

Leafs sign Auston Matthews to a 5 year deal. He’ll be getting 11.634M per year. Think about this:1st overall pick (1) in 2016 (16) and wears number 34 (34)11.634Simple maths!

2.1M for a bottom six forward with good possession numbers and cement hands sounds like a great selling point, I’m sure.

Well every team is gonna have one pretty soon. So that’s a pretty dumb thing to say

    1) This actually is keeping cap hit down. 2) Term of last generation of entry level doesn't mean much. 3) This might suck in five years, OK, it will, but this is a good cap hit now. 4) It'd be real nice if Marner sees this and says "damn, let's just get this done" to his agent.
  20. 1 point
All those teams have not faced the cap crunch the Leafs are in right now. The 1.5M we save on going on a shorter term is 2/3rds of the 4th line. Him signing for 5 years doesn't mean he's walking after the 5 years.

JT is making 11... it’s the world we live in, bruh. The fact that he’s coming in less than mcdavid after two years of cap increases is pretty amazing

The Game Ryan Kesler is expected to return for the Anaheim Ducks against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Monday. Kesler, a 33-year-old center who has six points (four goals, two assists) in 44 games this season, missed five games with a hamstring injury. The Ducks have lost three straight while being outscored 17-4 and are 2-11-4 in their past 17 games since Dec. 18. Goalie John Gibson , who allowed six goals on 14 shots in a 9-3 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, is expected to start Goalie Frederik Andersen is likely to start for the Maple Leafs, who are 3-4-1 in their past eight games. Players to watch Ducks forward Daniel Sprong has four points (three goals, one assist) in his past four games. Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews has scored in three straight games. They said it "Kesler is a very competitive guy. If there is one player in that dressing room that we don't have to worry about ever coming out and being in a compete mode, he takes the challenge personally, whoever he is going to play against. His challenge is to outplay that player he's playing across from and that's a huge step for our hockey club." -- Ducks coach Randy Carlyle "Not to pay attention to that, that doesn't mean anything. You've got to come focused on what you can do and make sure you prepare your way just like any other night. You have to come and do your job and make sure you're ready to go." -- Maple Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen on the Ducks Ducks projected lineup Rickard Rakell -- Ryan Getzlaf -- Corey Perry Devin Shore -- Adam Henrique -- Jakob Silfverberg Nick Ritchie -- Ryan Kesler -- Daniel Sprong Derek Grant -- Carter Rowney -- Patrick Eaves Hampus Lindholm -- Brandon Montour Cam Fowler -- Josh Manson Michael Del Zotto -- Korbinian Holzer John Gibson Chad Johnson Scratched: Adam Cracknell, Brian Gibbons, Jaycob Megna Injured: Ondrej Kase (shoulder), Ryan Miller(knee) Maple Leafs projected lineup Patrick Marleau -- Auston Matthews -- Kasperi Kapanen Zach Hyman -- John Tavares -- Mitchell Marner Connor Brown -- Nazem Kadri -- William Nylander Par Lindholm -- Frederik Gauthier -- Andreas Johnsson Jake Muzzin -- Morgan Rielly Jake Gardiner -- Nikita Zaitsev Travis Dermott -- Ron Hainsey Frederik Andersen Garret Sparks Scratched: Igor Ozhiganov, Justin Holl Injured: Tyler Ennis (broken ankle) Status report Ennis took part in the morning skate, his first on-ice session with Toronto since breaking his ankle Dec. 22, but won't play. Stat pack Gibson has allowed three goals or more in eight of his past 12 games. … Rielly has four assists during a three-game point streak. Hopefully we can be the reason that Carlyle gets fired. Brexit

It was a nudge-nudge wink-wink under-the-table type of thing. A bribe, basically. One that, ironically enough, is probably a huge breach of E.U. competition laws. Which we're still subject to. As more details emerge, it seems that the Tories were prepared to pay up to £80m. Nobody knows how much they actually paid. Apparently it's less than £61m, more than nothing.

I think you get kapanen relatively cheap if you walk him to his free agency years, or put him within one year of it. Maybe not 2.75, but get Hainsey the fuck off that list and it should come out in the wash. If we can dump zaitsev’s contract, im really not worried about our cap situation, our D is incredibly cheap next year and then Marleau’s contract will be off the books. We’re in a decent shape.

If Gardiner has a tradeable contract then I wouldn't mind keeping him for an extra year, until Liljegren/Sandin arrive. Kapanen under 3m would be great. Put him in top 6, Moore on 3rd line possibly, an AHL guy and vet UFA(Ennis like signing) on 4th. Brown traded maybe in a deal for a dman as early as this year?

Not related to McQuaid necessarily but: I've heard this echo chamber response a lot recently and while the overall point reasonable, there are ebbs and flows to a hockey game and four other players on the ice as well. Every single team goes through periods in a game where they are hemmed in. That's just hockey; the tide changes. So, it's good to have a defenseman that can operate in those conditions. Also, you are showing the very flaw, with certain statistics, and that's the issues of putting it all on one guy. The coach for example could prefer the reliability of a specific player and put him out in circumstances that may be over his head such as when his team has a lead and the inevitable pressure from the opposition comes regardless of who else would be out there, or two excess defensive zone starts against perhaps the toughest players on the opposition. gain, not necessarily as it relates to McQuaid, but it can put things in context. It's worth looking at the context before making an absolute statement.

If it's between Gudas and McQuaid, I'd take Gudas for sure. I just don't see his price being too bad, especially for what he'll bring.
