Official Toronto Raptors Thread

Recommended Posts

From what I saw on other sites, people saying possible candidates in buyout market could be:

C
-Kanter
-Dedmon
-Gortat
-Markieff Morris (apparently close friends with Lowry)

Kanter would be best option for a backup C. One of top rebounders in the league. And given his current legal situation with Turkey (because of political views), maybe going to Canada might be good for him personally. He even tweeted this earlier this season:

Matthews likely going to the Pacers, so Ellington probably the only option for a SF, but he'd be a good fit. He plays majority of the time at SG, but in Miami he played about 40% of his time split between SF and PG.  Also a 38% 3pt shooter. Raptors dealing CJ AND Wright, Ellington could fill in for both.

Meh, Kanter's average but as a Monroe replacement, he'd do.

Raps need to come away with 1 or 2 shooters. Ellington or Lin would be nice adds.

Not sure Gasol is much of an upgrade over JV but we'll see.

This season alone:

Gasol: 8.6 Rebounds, 1.2 Blocks, 4.7 Assists, 1.1 Steals
JV: 7.2 Rebounds, 0.8 Blocks, 1.0 Assists, 0.4 Steals

Delon/CJ shot 32% from 3. Gasol is 34% shooter. Not drastically better, but perhaps being more open with Raptors could improve those numbers. Defensive Box +/- also goes in Gasols favor big time. 3.3 for him, 0.5 combined for the other 3 (CJ weighs this down, but without him JV/Wright are 1.7)

Win/Shares (last season):
Valanciunas - 7.6
Gasol - 4.0

This season, JV at 2.7, Gasol at 4.1. 23 less games played for JV.

PER, JV over 20 in his last 5 seasons. Gasol hasn't had a PER over 20 in 2 years.

Valanciunas has a higher defensive rebounding percentage and offensive rebounding percentage. JV's also a better free throw shooter.

I think Gasol's playmaking and spacing are helpful, (3 point shooting) but it's not a clear win as your stats point to.

Gasol can make plays inside as well. Look at JV in playoffs, he's effective in certain matchups but in others he gets hacked so often with no calls and if pressured too much inside he can't make a play to get it back out.

Jv long term will be better, but Gasol helps what we need right now. Bonus that we clear space too. Buyouts this year, and next year Gasol will be making 25m, but CJ would've been making 8m anyways, not to mention Wright for sure wouldn't stay, and probably couldn't keep JV, so it more than offsets

Gasol at 34 is better than JV, Wright was likely gone in the offseason anyways as they have enough money tied into Lowry and FVV, and Miles has been injured and nowhere as good as he was last season off the bench.

Go big or go home.

Boucher is the big.  Canadian and improving. What’s not to like

He's not the big, he's A big. Gonna be the 13th man on the roster (Miller 14th). Lin is 11th man, and PTBNL which is hopefully a C, will be 12th.

They only signed Boucher because they needed 12 guys on their NBA roster before doing these additional moves

There's a chance Pau Gasol could be available too. If he is, I don't see how he'd turn down joining Raptors.

Well, he already turned down Toronto last year to sign with the Spurs. Gasol/Serge/Gasol up the middle would be ridiculous, but I don’t think Pau is too open to be playing limited minutes.

He turned them down, but this year the Spurs aren't as good, we're better, are the team with Kawhi, and a big selling point of having his brother on our team as well. Ring chasing with his brother? Sounds like a great opportunity.

If Davis signed an extension, I still wouldn't mind a Siakam for Davis deal.

But dealing a potential future all star for a 2 year playoff rental, I wouldn't do it.

But now we know why Masai didn't even want to part with Siakam in the Kawhi deal. Imagine losing both Siakam and DeRozan in that deal and then Siakam had this type of season in SA.

As for buyout targets, Kanter going to Blazers and Morris going to Thunder.  Raptors have 13 spots taken up right now. 14 including Lloyd on 2 way deal. Sounds like Ujiri is fine waiting until end of the month to see if any teams make any surprise buyouts.
