NHL to Seattle?

In all these years of talks about what to do with the KeyArena and if Seattle will get a new arena, this seems to be biggest development yet. The group involved in this for years is led by Tim Leiweke. Now joining in on this is David Bonderman(minority owner of the Celtics who is a billionaire) and Jerry Bruckheimer(producer of things like Amazing Race, CSI, Pirates of the Caribbean among many other major things).

From what they say, seems like 3-4 years from time they start to actually finish the arena. So if they get started within next year, then 2021 could be a realistic time they could have a team playing there.

So NHL would get another western franchise and that'd also mean QC could get a team like the Panthers or Hurricanes to relocate there. Who knows, maybe if Seattle does actually make all this arena stuff official and actually starts renovating the KeyArena, NHL could do for them what they did for other teams back in 90s and award them expansion franchise years in advance. That would help QCs case in getting a team sooner as they could start playing before Seattle enters the league.

Interesting developments, but I think Seattle will get the Supersonics back first, and the NHL will monitor how the market deals with the NBA before hockey comes to town.

I don't think there's a question about the market, seems like arena was only thing holding them back. NHL wanted Seattle to put together a bid for expansion, and the lack of an arena plan is what held up everything.

Seattle getting a team, the rivalries they'll have with western canadian teams(specifically Vancouver) would be huge. Look at all the people from Vancouver going down to see a Jays-Mariners game. Can you imagine all the Canucks fans going down to Seattle and vice-versa.

Tentative arena deal for Seattle. If it happens, arena will be done by 2020. If nothing falls through this time, then this could be the final thing that leads to NHL in Seattle. Seattle gets expansion team in 2020 and QC gets relocated team in 2018 or 2019? That'd be good.

Seattle makes the most sense for expansion. Completes the 16 team west, tons of Canadians going over the border for games. Move Arizona to Central division because we all know they'll never move.

Expansion vs Relocation for Seattle all rests on Coyotes. If NHL really believes Coyotes will be moving in next 3-4 years, give them to Seattle(and QC gets expansion). If Coyotes still aren't moving 15 years after the time they were supposed to move, then let QC have Panthers or Canes and Seattle gets expansion. Seattle at least coming close to having a date set for the arena completion would give NHL an actual timeline to work with for the first time.

Arena renovations approved in Seattle. Only a matter of time now before they get a team. Some people seem to think we could see some kind of announcement by June. Expansion or relocation.

Timeline still seems the same, 2020 will be the completion of the renovations. Still hoping it could happen the way I mentioned before. Seattle gets the expansion team for 2020-2021 season, and QC gets relocation for 18-19 or 19-20 season. So the conferences stays the same after QC enters, gets evened when Seattle enters, and if Houston or someone like that ever gets a team, we could see someone like Chicago move to the east.

Divisional realignment in 2013-14 left one open spot in the Pacific Division and one open spot in the Central Division.

There may need to be some rotation to make that work within the Western Conference, but I don't see them pulling a team from the Eastern Conference to the Western Conference to allow an Eastern team in via expansion.   It's not ideal to have Eastern timezone teams playing in the Western conference.  Half of your away games end up being at 9:30pm or 10:30pm at night.  It's not ideal for travel or TV ratings, although with the geographic separation in the Western conference the travel is always rougher there.

Right now all of the Eastern timezone teams are in the Eastern conference.  Expect expansion into a western US market and relocation to Quebec City, if it ever happens.

They are trying to fix problems by piling more shit on top of it.  Instead of a tightly nit 28 team league they're adding revenues by adding teams, watering down the product, and making really bad policy changes in-game.   Get rid of the losers in Arizona, Carolina, and Florida.

Assuming no other changes happens in the next 3 years, will we see something as simple as Seattle going to Pacific and Coyotes moving to Central (and we got the same playoff format with top 3 division teams and 2 WC)? Or might they go the 4x4 way with divisions (and then have 4 division winners and the other 4 being WC)?

East:
Division 1: Leafs,Sens,Habs,Sabres
Division 2: Devils,Rangers,Islanders,Bruins
Division 3: Lightning,Panthers,Canes,Caps
Division 4: Wings,Pens,Flyers,Jackets

West:
Division 1: Canucks,Oilers,Flames,Seattle
Division 2: Sharks,Kings,Ducks,Vegas
Division 3: Coyotes,Avs,Stars,Jets
Division 4: Wild,Hawks,Blues,Preds
