No wonder NHL is behind other leagues. Their biggest priority is dealing with players swearing and outdated fines instead of the playoff format. In their words, there's no reason to change the format because people like it.......

I'm sure 3 of the top 5 teams this year in the league are happy not making the conference finals, because that's what this format guarantees.

Apparently the playoff format "expires" at end of season.

Though doesn't seem like league will move on from it. But seeing how it does "expire", maybe they'd reconsider? Especially if Leafs get eliminated, you have all of Toronto and more importantly Rogers as well upset with NHL and their format.

More than ever, players are letting it be known to the NHLPA that they are unhappy with the playoff format. I was a little skeptical because it is CBA time, and no one easily gives up anything during negotiations. However, the complaints are legit. It is unlikely that things will be changed for next year, but the players have to sign off on anything longer than that and have asked for more proof that the current setup works as intended.

Friedman with interesting note.

Very likely nothing changes, after all, this is the NHL. It'd take them a week of meetings in Florida to decide on if the sky is blue.

Was literally to stop goalies from having any kind of skill outside of the crease.

They didn't like how The Marty's could absolutely kill a forecheck before it even began. They considered it killing the game.

I consider the Trapezoid killing the game.

I would lije to see the top 16 teams make the playoffs. Then 1 play 16, 2 play 15...etc.

With divisions and conferences, they guarantee that certain teams will never face off for the cup like Leafs Habs. It's a shame really that they just throw that type of history away for tv revenue.

NHL would never consider that. Scheduling/travel would be horrible.

What time do you schedule a Leafs-Sharks playoff series? 8pm EST on a weekday where it's 5pm local for people in SJ? Or a SJ home game where Leafs fans will have to wait until 10pm to watch?

NBA more than NHL needs to do this(since conferences are one sided), and even they have said no to it. MLB has it and it gets messed at times. Who can forget having some 3pm weekday playoff game. Not the best way to maximize profits/get most eyes on the action.

Simplest solution until next CBA would be 1-8 format, with division winners guaranteed a top 4 seed. NHL wants to boost rivalries, but does this format really force it as much? If Leafs-Panthers play each other in back to back playoffs, would that suddenly make Leafs fans and Panthers fans hate each other? Obviously playoffs can help intensify a rivalry, but smaller divisions would do that too. In a 32 team league, if you have 4 teams per division, you could play those 3 other teams 6 or so times a year. That's one way of building a rivalry, and would be against teams actually near you too.

I suspect there wouldnt be a leafs or habs fan on the planet that wouldnt find a way to tune in if they met in the SCF.

Its unfortunate that the mighty dollar trumps 100 year old history, but it is the world we wallow in.

Remove 2nd assists!

it will lower the players point totals - which will result in potential lower $$ contracts.

thoughts?

Are we just removing them from those who get a lot? Because if not, you're just leveling the playing field and the 60 point scorer is the new 80 point scorer...and will still be paid relative to his peers....

remove goals to bring the cost of contracts down.......and add more goons....lots of goons ( 5 per team)......and use a sponge rubber puck in the second period....and have Broc be the Coach of the Habs against the Leafs

Did you come up with that all by yourself, wow. Amazing.

Filtering out the 'yeah but he has 923047823 assists, so he should get paid 5 million more'. The point total will drop, yes.. And sure, the new 60 point scorer will  be the 80, that's fine?

Huh?  Removing secondary assists from the game is not going to change salary impacts of the best players as they will still be the best players.  Players aren't paid by some fixed per point value

Paul doesn't agree. Actually, Paul wanted to get rid of 2nd assists too, so Strome wouldnt be as close to Mitch in the OHL.

Anyways, it's more from a point of view that the 2nd assists is... well.. there's a reason other sports don't show the 2nd assists.. And also again, it could make someone with 30 first assists look worse than someone with 31 2nd assists, point wise.

The second assist can be just as important as the first assist. Definitely not always, but sometimes for sure. You’re also missing the point. If you cut out secondary assists, everyone’s point totals will drop. It won’t cut down on the average players salary
